Water is a central part of our lives. We need access to it every day in order to drink it, clean with it, cook with it, and more. But how can we make sure that everyone gets the water they need when they need it? The answer is water infrastructure. Water infrastructure involves everything that plays a role in providing water to citizens, such as treatment plants, reservoirs and storage, distribution systems, and more.
However, over time these systems can deteriorate, causing the water they supply to become contaminated and making it dangerous for those who use it. Because of the importance of clean drinking water, there have been different pieces of legislation passed over the years in order to upgrade water infrastructure and keep Americans safe.
One of the most recent major pieces of national legislation was America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2018, which implemented the most far-reaching changes in the nation’s water infrastructure since 1996. But, how much does it cost to upgrade water infrastructure?
On March 30th, 2022, there were two infrastructure bills signed by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer that plan to use over $4 billion in federal funding for the “Building Michigan Together Plan.” Over $2 billion of the funds will be allocated toward water alone, including drinking water infrastructure, wastewater infrastructure, and more. This isn’t too surprising, as Michigan has been home to some of the country’s most serious water crises, such as in Flint and, more recently, Benton Harbor.
A large portion of the funding will focus on building water infrastructure and ensuring that the state’s population has reliable access to clean drinking water. Unfortunately, it can take years to replace aging water infrastructure, but there are other water infrastructure solutions that can help.
One of these solutions that has emerged in recent years is supplying water filters to residents in areas where water infrastructure needs to be upgraded. At Aqua Clara, we are hoping to be part of the solution in Michigan by providing our Universal Cartridge Filters to those who don’t have access to clean water.
We promote water sustainability in all its forms, including sustainable water infrastructure. We provide access to clean water by designing, developing, and disseminating clean water technologies to benefit those who live on less than $2 per day. We also aim to provide safe drinking water by offering our Universal Cartridge Filter, which reduces many different contaminants. You can purchase a filter directly from our website, or they are also now available at Wal-Mart.
Our Universal Cartridge Filter fits most household filter products, includes a rubber seal to protect against contamination, and will purify your home's drinking water at a reasonable price. The proceeds from these filters help fund our projects all over the world, so consider helping us make a difference by purchasing a filter today!
Scientists long ago discovered how to purify unsafe water. To us, the central issue has been in designing solutions that are both sustainable and scalable and that can reach the millions in need while at the same time continuing to function without sustained outside input. Our target populations are those individuals and families who live on $2 per day or less.
We are a technology transfer organization. Our niche in clean water continues to be in designing science-based technologies that utilize locally available materials where possible and then transferring what we learn to those working in areas of need. The cost of our technologies varies by country and is dependent on the prevailing costs of raw materials, such as plastic containers, PVC piping, sand, etc. Learn more by visiting our website.
