Ways to Improve Water Sustainability

You’ve probably heard the term “sustainability” used increasingly often in recent years. Sustainability is defined as “the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level,” and has been a focal point in society as we look at our current state and forward to the future. One of the most critical types of sustainability is water sustainability. So, what exactly is water sustainability?

What Is Water Sustainability?

Water sustainability refers to our current rate of water consumption and use, and whether that rate will be viable as we progress into the future. A major part of water sustainability is access to clean water and our ability to recycle, clean, and reuse water. There are many issues with our current water sustainability outlook, so how can we improve it?

How Can We Improve Water Sustainability?

Personal Sustainable Water Use - One of the main ways to improve water sustainability is to practice sustainable water use. This means teaching everyone how to limit their water consumption and only use what they truly need. Some easy changes to make include turning off the sink while brushing your teeth, only watering your lawn early in the morning when it's cool, and moving away from plastic water bottles that are often not fully consumed.

Sustainable Water Infrastructure - Another way to improve water sustainability is to commit to sustainable water infrastructure. This includes replacing old pipes, investing in new water technologies, modernizing water treatment plants, and making sure we can properly recycle, clean, and reuse water so everyone has access to clean water.

Being able to clean the water that is accessible to us and use it to drink, cook, or clean is incredibly important. A great way to do this is by using water filters to purify water from nearby sources, making it safe for consumption.

Water Resources Sustainability - Another way to improve water sustainability is to promote water resources sustainability. This means using all types of water in a sustainable way——whether it’s for personal use, agricultural purposes, renewable energy, or other purposes—since it is one of our most valuable resources.

Water resources sustainability involves analyzing water resource needs, understanding water supply reliability, improving irrigation, and optimizing how we use water. A perfect example of this is using water as a renewable energy source via hydroelectric dams, and then being able to use that same water for another purpose, such as drinking, irrigating, and more.

At Aqua Clara, we are committed to all forms of sustainability, but especially water sustainability. We provide access to clean water by designing, developing, and disseminating clean water technologies to benefit those who live on less than $2 per day. We also aim to reduce the number of people who purchase bottled water by offering our Universal Cartridge Filter, which reduces many different contaminants. You can purchase a filter directly from our website, or they are also now available at Wal-Mart and on Amazon

Our Universal Cartridge Filter fits most household filter products, includes a rubber seal to protect against contamination, and will purify your home's drinking water at a reasonable price. The proceeds from these filters help fund our projects all over the world, so consider helping us make a difference by purchasing a filter today!

About Aqua Clara International

Scientists long ago discovered how to purify unsafe water.  To us, the central issue has been in designing solutions that are both sustainable and scalable and that can reach the millions in need while at the same time continuing to function without sustained outside input.  Our target populations are those individuals and families who live on $2 per day or less.

We are a technology transfer organization. Our niche in clean water continues to be in designing science-based technologies that utilize locally available materials where possible and then transferring what we learn to those working in areas of need.  The cost of our technologies varies by country and is dependent on the prevailing costs of raw materials, such as plastic containers, PVC piping, sand, etc. Learn more by visiting our website.
