Many are familiar with the dangers of unclean drinking water. Bacteria and pathogens like cholera and dysentery are common threats laying within the untreated drinking water. In many parts of the world, however, water is contaminated with heavy concentrations of arsenic. Usually, this contamination is natural, emerging from natural pockets of arsenic beneath the earth. Despite this, arsenic and the threat of arsenic poisoning puts many communities at risk.
The threat of arsenic poisoning presented many challenges to Aqua Clara. As a charitable producer of water filters and filtration systems, getting this poisonous metal out of water required more than a traditional filter could provide. After plenty of research and development, we have created variants of our filters that also combat arsenic poisoning.
While these arsenic filters are not yet seeing widespread use, they are showing encouraging results throughout the world. We adapted our Facility Filter to account for arsenic in Mexico, a project that has successfully supplied clean water to a local community center. Elsewhere, adapted Household Filters provide arsenic-free clean water to homes in Nicaragua. These developments are encouraging and could not be accomplished without the help of our supporters and research partners.
Much of the funding for our filter projects comes from donors and customers like you. While we're known for installing filters in water-insecure areas, we also have a commercial filter for your home. Our Universal Cartridge Filter fits most household filter products and will purify your home's drinking water at a reasonable price. The proceeds of these filters help fund our projects all over the world.
Scientists long ago discovered how to purify unsafe water. To us, the central issue has been in designing solutions that are both sustainable and scalable and that can reach the millions in need while at the same time continuing to function without sustained outside input. Our target populations are those individuals and families who live on $2 per day or less.
We are a technology transfer organization. Our niche in clean water continues to be in designing science-based technologies that utilize locally available materials where possible and then transferring what we learn to those working in areas of need. The cost of our technologies varies by country and is dependent on the prevailing costs of raw materials, such as plastic containers, PVC piping, sand, etc. Learn more by visiting our website.
